Acts 1:12-26

Matthias Chosen to Replace Judas

¹²Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem^(A) from the hill called the Mount of Olives,^(B) a Sabbath day’s walk^[a] from the city. ¹³When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room^(C) where they were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James.^(D) ¹⁴They all joined together constantly in prayer,^(E) along with the women^(F) and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.^(G)

¹⁵In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a group numbering about a hundred and twenty) ¹⁶and said, “Brothers and sisters,^[b]^(H) the Scripture had to be fulfilled^(I) in which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through David concerning Judas,^(J) who served as guide for those who arrested Jesus. ¹⁷He was one of our number^(K) and shared in our ministry.”^(L)

¹⁸(With the payment^(M) he received for his wickedness, Judas bought a field;^(N) there he fell headlong, his body burst open and all his intestines spilled out. ¹⁹Everyone in Jerusalem heard about this, so they called that field in their language^(O) Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.)

²⁰“For,” said Peter, “it is written in the Book of Psalms:

“‘May his place be deserted;
let there be no one to dwell in it,’^[c]^(P)

and,

“‘May another take his place of leadership.’^[d]^(Q)

²¹Therefore it is necessary to choose one of the men who have been with us the whole time the Lord Jesus was living among us, ²²beginning from John’s baptism^(R) to the time when Jesus was taken up from us. For one of these must become a witness^(S) with us of his resurrection.”

²³So they nominated two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. ²⁴Then they prayed,^(T) “Lord, you know everyone’s heart.^(U) Show us^(V) which of these two you have chosen ²⁵to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs.” ²⁶Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles.^(W)

¹May God arise,^(A) may his enemies be scattered;^(B)
    may his foes flee^(C) before him.
²May you blow them away like smoke—^(D)
    as wax melts^(E) before the fire,
    may the wicked perish^(F) before God.
³But may the righteous be glad
    and rejoice^(G) before God;
    may they be happy and joyful.

⁴Sing to God, sing in praise of his name,^(H)
    extol him who rides on the clouds^[b]^(I);
    rejoice before him—his name is the Lord.^(J)
⁵A father to the fatherless,^(K) a defender of widows,^(L)
    is God in his holy dwelling.^(M)
⁶God sets the lonely^(N) in families,^[c]^(O)
    he leads out the prisoners^(P) with singing;
    but the rebellious live in a sun-scorched land.^(Q)

⁷When you, God, went out^(R) before your people,
    when you marched through the wilderness,^[d]^(S)
⁸the earth shook,^(T) the heavens poured down rain,^(U)
    before God, the One of Sinai,^(V)
    before God, the God of Israel.^(W)
⁹You gave abundant showers,^(X) O God;
    you refreshed your weary inheritance.
¹⁰Your people settled in it,
    and from your bounty,^(Y) God, you provided^(Z) for the poor.

Jesus Prays to Be Glorified

17 After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven^(A) and prayed:

“Father, the hour has come.^(B) Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you.^(C) ²For you granted him authority over all people^(D) that he might give eternal life^(E) to all those you have given him.^(F) ³Now this is eternal life: that they know you,^(G) the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.^(H) ⁴I have brought you glory^(I) on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do.^(J) ⁵And now, Father, glorify me^(K) in your presence with the glory I had with you^(L) before the world began.^(M)

Jesus Prays for His Disciples

⁶“I have revealed you^[a]^(N) to those whom you gave me^(O) out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. ⁷Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. ⁸For I gave them the words you gave me^(P) and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you,^(Q) and they believed that you sent me.^(R) ⁹I pray for them.^(S) I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me,^(T) for they are yours. ¹⁰All I have is yours, and all you have is mine.^(U) And glory has come to me through them. ¹¹I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world,^(V) and I am coming to you.^(W) Holy Father, protect them by the power of^[b] your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one^(X) as we are one.^(Y)
